Greco-Roman prophecies against end time Sabbath keepers

Many Sabbath keepers are unaware that there are Eastern Orthodox (Greek) and Roman Catholic prophecies warning against Sabbath keepers in the end times.

The Roman Catholic pope often called “Gregory the Great” (died 604) wrote the following:

Gregory, servant of the servants of God, to his most beloved sons the Roman citizens.

It has come to my ears that certain men of perverse spirit have sown among you some things that are wrong and opposed to the holy faith, so as to forbid any work being done on the Sabbath day. What else can I call these but preachers of Antichrist (Gregory I. Registrum Epistolarum, Book XIII, Letter 1).

Notice the following Roman Catholic prophecies:

Dionysus of Luxembourg (died 1682) Antichrist…will teach that…Saturday is to be observed instead of Sunday (Connor, p.85).

St. Hildegard (died 1179): Antichrist … His doctrine of faith will be taken from the Jewish religion and seemingly will not differ much from the fundamental beliefs of Christianity, for he will teach that there is one God who created the world, who rewards the obeyers of his commands and trespassers he chastises, who will raise all from the dead in due time. This God has spoken through Moses, therefore the precepts of the Mosaic law are to be kept, especially circumcision and the keeping of the Sabbath (Culleton R. Gerald. The Reign of Antichrist, Reprint TAN Books, Rockford, IL, 1974, p. 127).

Notice the following Roman Catholic prophecy:

Catholic writer and priest P. Huchedé (19th century): “After having weakened the faith of Christ in the minds and hearts of many, he will proceed to show that the law of Moses still prevails; he will re-establish the Sabbath and all the legal observances; and he will invite the Jews to re-establish their nationality, after which he will declare himself the true messiah; he will endeavor to prove the truth of his assertion from Scripture—he will declare his design of rebuilding Jerusalem and the temple and of bringing the whole world under his dominion…According to St. Cyril of Jerusalem (Cath. 15), he will win the esteem and attachment of mankind by his urbane and unbounded kindness…he will work all kinds of miracles…He will therefore appear as performing miracles similar to all those wrought by Jesus Christ…Antichrist being a Jew, will be circumcised; he will observe the Mosaic law…Then by order of the tyrant the continual sacrifice shall be abolished (Dan. 9:27).  The holy sacrifice of the Mass shall no longer be offered up publicly on the altars.  The Church shall be devastated; the sacred vessels desecrated; the priests shall be scattered…It appears certain, then, that the Roman empire will be completely demolished by Antichrist and that he will substitute another in its place (Huchedé, P.  Translated by JBD. History of Antichrist.  Imprimatur Edward Charles Fabre, Bishop of Montreal.  English edition 1884, Reprint 1976.  TAN Books, Rockford (IL), pp. 17,18,26,54).

But Jesus observed Saturday instead of Sunday.

The Bible clearly teaches that Jesus kept the Sabbath that the Jews did:

Then Jesus returned in the power of the Spirit to Galilee, and news of Him went out through all the surrounding region. And He taught in their synagogues, being glorified by all. So He came to Nazareth, where He had been brought up. And as His custom was, He went into the synagogue on the Sabbath day, and stood up to read (Luke 4:14-16, NKJV throughout unless otherwise indicated).

Perhaps it should be mentioned that the Bible (The Rheims New Testament is the Roman Catholic accepted translation of the Latin Vulgate into the English language) does show that the seventh-day Sabbath remains for the people of God:

For he said in a certain place of the seventh day, thus: And God rested the seventh day from all his works…Therefore there is left a sabbatisme for the people of God (Hebrews 4:4,9, Rheims New Testament).

The term “sabbatisme” means “Sabbath-keeping” or or observance of the Sabbath. Its French definition is “Observance du sabbat” per Centre National de Ressources Textuelles et Lexicales (http://www.cnrtl.fr/definition/sabbatisme viewed 03/02/11).

Thus, it would seem that Jesus would have to keep the seventh-day Sabbath. And since the second resurrection does not occur until after the millennium (cf. Revelation 20:5), Jesus Himself will teach God “will raise all from the dead in due time.” Thus, there seems to be some confusion among some Greco-Roman Catholic seers.

It also should be noted that just before Jesus returns, the Eastern Orthodox have a prophecy that various Sabbath-keepers will be publicly executed and the time period is supposed to be when the “Great Monarch” rises up:

Blessed Hieronymus Agathaghelos (1279): And lo, an evil assembly of the crafty leader, dressed in black mourning apparel…those who were taking in a most hypocritical manner the most holy name of Christ … those were the most filthy citizens of Pentapolis … these are semi-godless men … they will have to pay the price before the public executioner of the Sabbatians. (Tzima Otto, H.  The Great Monarch and WWIII in Orthodox, Roman Catholic, and Scriptural Prophecies. Verenika Press, Rock City (SC), 2000, pp. 134,135,240).

Because of intended killing of Sabbath keepers, much of the world will think that Sabbath keeping is wrong and will not recognize Jesus.

Why would those who think they are in the true Church do so? Well, because Jesus foretold it:

18 If the world hates you, you know that it hated Me before it hated you. 19 If you were of the world, the world would love its own. Yet because you are not of the world, but I chose you out of the world, therefore the world hates you. 20 Remember the word that I said to you, ‘A servant is not greater than his master.’ If they persecuted Me, they will also persecute you. If they kept My word, they will keep yours also. 21 But all these things they will do to you for My name’s sake, because they do not know Him who sent Me. (John 15:18-21)

Those Jesus was speaking to thought that they were faithful, yet they would not accept what the scriptures said about Him, just like most today will not accept what the Bible and church history says Christians should be doing today (see also Continuing History of the Church of God). More in persecution can be found in the article Persecutions by Church and State.

7th Day Churches

There are millions of people around the world who are part of seventh day Sabbath churches.

Most of those are in churches that are NOT ‘Church of God’ and do not hold to the original Christian faith.

The most faithful church is called the Continuing Church of God.

Here are links to articles about churches that keep the Sabbath, but are not Church of God:

Messianic Judaism Beliefs Differ from the Continuing Church of God Both groups keep the seventh-day Sabbath, but have important differences in doctrines and practices. Here is a link to a related sermon: Messianic Jewish Beliefs.

SDA/CCOG Differences: Two Horned Beast of Revelation and 666 The genuine Church of God is NOT part of the Seventh-day Adventists. This article explains two prophetic differences, the trinity, differences in approaching doctrine, including Ellen White. Did Ellen White make prophetic errors? Did Ellen White make false prophecies? Here is a version in the Spanish language: SDA/COG Diferencias: La bestia de dos cuernos de Apocalipsis y 666. Here are two sermons in the English language: Seventh Day Baptists/Adventists/Messianics: Protestant or COG? and CCOG and SDA differences and similarities. Here is a link to an article in the Spanish language: Diferencias: SDA/CCOG: La bestia de dos cuernos de Apocalipsis y 666.

Seventh Day Baptists are Protestant, not Church of God This article explains reasons why Baptists, include seventh day ones (SDBs) do not have the historical and doctrinal ties to the original church that many have claimed. Here are two sermons in the English language: Seventh Day Baptists/Adventists/Messianics: Protestant or COG? and Protestant, Baptist, and CCOG History.

The first three chapters of the Book of Revelation speak of seven churches. A careful reading suggests that there will be people spiritually associated with the last four of them. All would be considered 7th day Sabbath groups.

The one with the least would likely be the remnant of the Thyatira Church Era. Information on some that seem to be related are in the following:

The Thyatira Church Era was predominant circa 1050 A.D. to circa 1600 A.D. The Church during the Inquisition.

WCG-claimed Adherents: Comments on the Teachings of Ron Wallen, Philip Neal, Kenneth W., GRUMPS, Jesse Arellano, and others who Profess(ed) that WCG has God’s Authority Can one still believe what Herbert W. Armstrong used to teach and still be in WCG? This article addresses this important issue.

The next era (or as A.N. Dugger referred to them as “church periods”) would be the Sardis Church Era. Jesus said that there were “a few names even in Sardis who have not defiled their garments” (Revelation 2:4), it should be understand that there are relatively few real Christians currently in Sardis. Thus, do not think that the majority in most Sardis-related groups are true Christians:

The Sardis Church Era was predominant circa 1600 A.D. to circa 1933 A.D.

CG7-D: Church of God, (Seventh Day): History and Teachings Nearly all COG’s I am aware of trace part of their history through some affiliation with this group. Loren Stacy is the president of the largest CG7 USA group (Denver). Do you know much about them?

CG7-S: Church of God 7th Day, Salem (West Virginia) This group formed by A.N. Dugger in 1933 when he split from the CG7 group he was once president of.

Church of God Seventh Day Ghana. This group is part the Continuing Church of God. While it is NOT a Sardis group (it is part of the Philadelphian remnant) it has retained the name Church of God Seventh Day. It was a Sardis-derived group that recognized admonitions in the New Testament to hold to the original faith.

J7DCG: Jerusalem 7th Day Church of God A sacred name group claiming A.N. Dugger and a Jerusalem headquarters.See also The Bible, Church History, and Sacred Names and

MCGSD: Meridian Church of God Seventh Day A group that was a split from the old Stanberry COG.

The most faithful of the 4 churches of Revelation 2 & 3 remaining in the 21st century is the continuation of the Philadelphia Church Era. As a remnant at this stage, Philadelphian Christians are not the bulk of 21st century Christians, but are the only ones that Jesus promises to protect from “hour of trial which shall come upon the whole world, to test those who dwell on the earth” (Revelation 3:10). Here is information:

The Philadelphia Church Era was predominant circa 1933 A.D. to 1986 A.D. The old Radio Church of God and old Worldwide Church of God, now the remnant of that era is basically the most faithful in the Church of God, like who hold to the beliefs and practices of the Continuing Church of God.

CCOG.ORG Continuing Church of God The Philadelphian organization, with the last days manifestations of Acts 2:17-18 striving to be most faithful amongst all real Christian groups to the word of God to fulfill Matthew 24:14, Matthew 28:19-20, and Romans 11:25 with literature in over 100 languages.

The last of the seven churches in Revelation 2 & 3 are the Laodiceans (it is plural in the Greek). The Laodicean Church Era is the last and represents the bulk of actual end time Christians. Just because a group is listed below does NOT mean that the group and/or its leaders are truly Church of God, but that they are Sabbatarians who claimed to be Church of God:

CBCG: Christian Biblical Church of God and its Teachings  Fred Coulter’s group–they tend to explain conspiracies, calendar issues, and have a “sea of glass” teaching. Plus they produce books on various subjects and have a unique Bible translation.

CCG: Teachings of the Christian Churches of God This group, led by Wade Cox, rejects the deity of Jesus and has other unusual teachings.

CGI: Teachings of the Church of God, International This article focuses on where CGI differs from the old WCG.

CGG: Church of the Great God This group, led by John Ritenbaugh, says the bride must first be made ready (it de-emphasizes the priority of public proclamation of the gospel). Might this lead to a selfish bride? This group also seriously seems to misunderstand end-time prophecy.

CGPKG: Concerns About Ronald Weinland’s Church of God-Preparing for the Kingdom of God Ronald Weinland falsely claimed to be one of the two witnesses God is raising up, that the Great Tribulation began on December 14, 2008, Jesus would return late September 2011, that Jesus would return on May 27, 2012, and later that Jesus would return on May 19, 2013. Why else does the Bible show that Ron Weinland is a false prophet? He has other views which show he may not be part of the Church of God.?

CGSC: Church of God, Southern California This article discusses some of how David Antion’s group differs from the old WCG.

CEM: Teachings of Christian Educational Ministries The late Ron Dart’s former confederation (not a church).

COGaIC: Church of God, an International CommunityThis is the group led by David Hulme. It has minimized parts of biblical prophecy and does not teach church eras.

COGIT: Church of God, In Truth This is what I’d call a calendar group. See also: Calculated or observed calendar?

COGlinks is a listing of pro-COG Sabbatarian group websites (although, they do not all agree with all the faithful views or doctrinal positions and some are not truly COG). Most are Laodicean.

COGOM: Church of God Outreach Ministries This was a CGI spin-off that says it is not a church.

COGWA: Concerns about Church of God, a Worldwide Association This is the largest group that came out of the United Church of God.  Here is some history and concerns about it. UCG’s former president Clyde Kilough and UK CEO Peter Hawkins are part of it.

CRMI: Christian Renewal Ministries International They teach Hebrew.

Independent/Unaffiliated: Independent Members of the COG: Herbert W. Armstrong Comments, Plus Questions and Answers What did Herbert W. PCG: Teachings Unique to the Philadelphia Church of God Simply calling oneself ‘Philadelphia’ does not make one so (see Revelation 3:7-9), nor does Gerald Flurry calling himself “that prophet” make it so. This article provides many quotes from this group which tries to look faithful.

RCG: Why Not the Restored Church of God? This group, led by David Pack, claims to be the most faithful. The information in this article suggests otherwise. Here is a version in the Spanish language: ¿Por qué no la Iglesia de Dios Restaurada?

7. The Laodicean Church Era has been predominant circa 1986 A.D. to present. Welcome to Church of God for 7th Day Sabbath Christians!

Why Church of God?

One would expect that the most faithful Christian church would use the some form of the name “Church of God.”

Why?

Well, the predominant biblical name of the true Church in the New Testament is “Church of God.” Variants of this expression are clearly stated singular and plural forms in twelve different places in the New Testament (Acts 20:28; 1 Corinthians 1:2; 10:32; 11:16,22; 15:9; 2 Corinthians 1:1; Galatians 1:13; 1 Thessalonians 2:14; 2 Thessalonians 1:4; 1 Timothy 3:5,15). The only other singular “church of” statement in scripture is a reference to the “church of the firstborn” (Hebrews 12:23).

Throughout Christian history, the true church has normally used a version of the expression “Church of God” (or “Churches of Christ,” cf. Romans 16:16) though often with another term, like a geographic region (cf. 1 Corinthians 1:2; 1 Thessalonians 1:1; 2 Thessalonians 1:1) or another word, with it (1 Timothy 3:15).

The Church of God is not just some brand new organization like some claim, but has continued for close to 2,000 years, despite relocations and organizational changes (for details, see also the online book: Continuing History of the Church of God).

Why 7th Day?

There are many in churches that call themselves “Church of God,” but do not have the original apostolic faith.

To be distinguished from many of them, in the 1800s, the term “Seventh Day” was often added to the name “Church of God.”

Why the importance of the seventh day?

Both the Old Testament (Ezekiel 22:26) and New Testament (Hebrews 4:9-11) warn against those that not teach people to observe the seventh day Sabbath.

The Bible shows that God made the seventh day a day of rest (Genesis 2:1-2), later called it the Sabbath (Exodus 16:23-27), and listed it as part of the Ten Commandments (Exodus 20:8-11).

Jesus kept the Sabbath (Luke 4:16) and was Lord of the Sabbath (Mark 2:28). The Apostles kept the seventh day Sabbath (Acts 13:14; 18:4). The New Testament teaches that, “For He has said somewhere concerning the seventh day: “AND GOD RESTED ON THE SEVENTH DAY FROM ALL HIS WORKS” … 9 So there remains a Sabbath rest for the people of God” (Hebrews 4:4,9 NASB).

Theologians realize that early Christians absolutely kept the seventh day Sabbath. More information can be found in the article: The Sabbath in the Early Church and Abroad.

Protestants and others who tend to not keep the seventh day Sabbath may be surprised to learn that the Church of Rome claims that the Bible endorses Saturday, no scriptures endorse Sunday, but that Sunday was the result of a decision of it made–details are in articles in The Catholic Mirror in the article series titled The Christian Sabbath.

Those striving to adhere to the original Christian faith would continue to observe the seventh day Sabbath today (cf. Jude 3).

The Original Christian Faith

History (along with scripture) teaches us that the original Christian church:

Kept the seventh-day Sabbath.
Avoided biblically unclean meat.
Accepted Jesus and strove to imitate Him.
Taught the gospel of the Kingdom of God.
Kept the biblical holy days.
Taught the mystery of God’s plan for humans.
Understood that God is only calling some now.
Understood that God will offer salvation to those not called in this age after the millennium.
Understood that the true Christian church could not remain in one location throughout church age.
Did not push or insist on the use of what are called sacred names.
Understood the truth about the Father, Son, and Holy Spirit.
Asserted having laying on of hands succession from the original apostles.
Believed that God would manifest His Spirit in the last days.

Only one church today continues with ALL of that original faith AND has truly had the confirmed manifestations of the Spirit as is prophesied in Act 2:17-18. It is called the Continuing Church of God.
